November 22, 2022: Agua Caliente will reopen on Monday November 28th after clean-up work and restoration following a lightning strike and fire earlier in the fall. For more see Friends of Agua Caliente.
Agua Caliente Park is in the north-east corner of the Tanque Verde Valley, 12325 East Roger Road, east of Soldier Trail. It is outside of Tucson city limits, but the area retains the Tucson mailing address. It is a 30 minute drive from midtown Tucson, depending on traffic.
The 101-acre park began as a ranch and resort in 1873 promoting the health benefits of hot springs that ran at that time. In 1984 the ranch was acquired by Pima County with the help of a donation from Roy P. Drachman, and is named in his honor. It opened to the public in 1985.
The park is a wonderful place for birding. Pima County offers bird walks twice a month (as of March 2022) for a nominal fee. You must sign up on the county recreation website. For more on the park in general, go to the website for Friends of Agua Caliente Park. For a recent bird count at the park, see this link from ebird.
