Northern Cardinal
The bright red male Northern Cardinal is hard to miss, and considering that they don't molt from their classic red plumage, nor do they migrate, these birds are breathtaking in winter snow. Images of the two males above were captured at Portal, AZ in April and January 2016. The female below, also captured in Portal at a backyard feeder, is often confused with the female adult Pyrrhuloxia. Northern Cardinals live year around in the U.S. Eastern and Central states, and in the Southwest into Arizona. Tucson is at the western border of their territory.
