American Kestrel
The American Kestrel is North America's littlest falcon, roughly the size and shape of a Mourning Dove, but with larger heads. They commonly perch on high branches or telephone wires, grabbing insects in the air or mice and voles from the ground. They frequent open areas with short ground vegetation and sparse trees, including meadows, grasslands, parks and farm fields, as well as more urban locales.
The Kestrel above was photographed at Agua Caliente Regional Park in November of 2016, where he has been seen on a recurrent basis. They are beautiful birds, and a visit to Agua Caliente is not complete without a scan for the Kestrel.
