Northern Shoveler
The Northern Shoveler is a dabbling duck that lives throughout North America, and here is wintering in White Water Draw in Cochise County, Arizona. Above 2 males (drakes) in flight in late December 2015, and below, same day , males (drakes) and females (hens) in early morning light sitting on the frozen wetlands. So what is colder, standing on ice or floating in ice water? They have long spoon-shaped bills with combs at the edges that allow them to filter feed.
